BASKETRY: Pre-Woven Cane & Spline Reed
If the opening you want to cane has a groove all the way around it, you need to press a sheet of pre-woven cane into that groove with wedges, and secure it with spline. A caning chisel cleans out old cane and spline from the groove.

SPLINE REED
Used to secure pre-woven cane to the groove in seat or panel; you need
enough to go around and a little extra. Spline is also used for basket
rims and handles. It is another rattan product, but it is cut from the
inside of the vine, and is not shiny. Put up in 600 foot hanks, in 6 foot
lengths. Sold by the running foot or by the hank. Refer to the chart to
determine what size you need. "Groove size" refers
to the width across the top of the channel the spline will wedge into.

CANING WEDGES
To help press a sheet of pre-woven cane evenly down into the groove before the spline is pressed into place.
CANING CHISEL
To remove old spline from caned seats and panels; for dredging out the groove. Hardened, tempered blade, with translucent plastic handle. Choose blade width at or under groove size.
