BASKETRY: Hardwood SplintsMachine-made, very smooth and regular in width and thickness. For making baskets, not seats. All four kinds come on 40 foot coils. The ash, maple and cherry splints are .5 mm thick, except for the ½" paper thin ash (.35 mm), which is used for making decorative curls. The walnut splints are .6 mm thick. HANDLING VENEER WOOD SPLINTS: Soak strips for about a minute. Remove from water, and use your fingers rub water on any areas that are still dry. Now wrap strips in a damp towel, and leave them for about 15 minutes (this step is called "mellowing"). These strips are fragile; weave them in by moving the spokes instead of the strips themselves.
